Week 32 of pregnancy: Preparing Home and Work for Your Baby
At 32 weeks, preparing for a baby can start to look like a long shopping list. It helps to separate things needed for everyday care from things that can wait. A safe place to sleep, basic clothing and a workable plan for support matter more than a finished nursery.
Start with the sleep space
Plan for your baby to sleep on their back in their own cot or Moses basket, in the same room as you for the first six months. Use a firm, flat mattress with a waterproof cover. Keep toys, pillows, cot bumpers and loose bedding out of the sleep space, and do not use cushioned sleeping pods or nests.
Place this setup where it will actually be used, rather than keeping it only in a decorated room elsewhere. Ask anyone who will help with care to understand the same arrangement. The safer baby sleep guide explains the details to revisit before birth.
Do not plan to sleep on a sofa or armchair while holding your baby. Think now about who you could ask for help when tired, and how you will put your baby back in their own sleep space before you sleep.
Keep the essentials list short
Basic baby clothing, nappies and changing supplies are useful starting points. If your baby will travel by car, arrange a suitable infant car seat and learn how it fits before the journey. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the rules where you live.
You might group supplies by task rather than by room: changing, dressing and leaving home. This makes gaps easier to spot without buying multiples of everything. Ask the maternity service what it provides and what you should bring.
Make responsibilities visible
Write down the tasks someone else may need to handle around the birth, such as feeding pets, collecting an older child or answering a work query. Give each task a contact person where possible. If you work, confirm the handover and leave arrangements with the appropriate person rather than relying on an informal conversation.
Keep your own capacity in mind. A task that is not urgent can stay unfinished. Our week 31 guide discusses making room for activity and rest.
Keep paying attention to movements
Your baby should continue moving as pregnancy progresses. Reduced or stopped movements, or a concerning change in the usual pattern, need an immediate call to your maternity unit, even at night. Do not explain a change away as less space or wait until the preparation list is finished.
