Weight loss and missing periods: When Your Body Needs Attention

If your periods stop during or after weight loss, tell a healthcare professional. A change in menstrual function can be a sign that the body is not getting enough energy for its needs, but other explanations still need consideration. The number on a scale does not establish the diagnosis.
Look beyond the amount of weight lost
Discuss how quickly the change happened, whether it was intended, and what eating and activity have been like. An energy shortfall can involve limited intake, increased exercise, illness, or several factors together.
Avoid treating the lost period as a reward for training or dieting. It is useful health information. Our guide to exercise and absent periods explains why training demands belong in the discussion.
Do not assume pregnancy is excluded
If pregnancy is possible, use an appropriately timed test. Missing or irregular periods do not provide reliable protection from pregnancy.
If the result is negative and bleeding still does not return, follow the plan in a negative test and no period. Mention the weight change when asking for assessment.
Seek a plan that supports recovery
A clinician may assess nutritional intake, exercise, hormone function, and general health. When an energy imbalance is involved, care can include nutritional support, changes to activity, and help with distress around food or body image.
There is no universal calorie target or exact weight gain that an article can prescribe for you. A dietitian or clinician can tailor the plan. Explain if changing food or exercise feels frightening or difficult; that information can help them offer the right support.
Ask about the wider effects
Prolonged loss of periods associated with low estrogen can affect bone health. Tell your clinician about fractures or repeated injuries and ask whether further assessment is needed.
Do not wait for a long diary if you are feeling unwell. Marked weakness, fainting, or difficulty maintaining food and fluids needs prompt medical attention. The goal is to address your overall health, not only obtain a bleed that makes the calendar look normal again.
