High AMH: Why More Is Not Automatically Better
A high AMH result can sound reassuring, but more is not automatically better in every setting. The result may reflect a larger number of small ovarian follicles and a stronger response to stimulation medicines. It does not prove better egg quality, regular ovulation or a guaranteed pregnancy.
Clarify the meaning of high
Ask how the result compares with the laboratory’s method and your age. Bring the full report, including units, to the appointment. The AMH results guide explains why comparison with an internet range can be misleading.
What matters next depends on why the test was ordered. A result used to plan an IVF cycle has a different role from a result being considered alongside irregular periods or other symptoms.
Keep PCOS assessment broader than one test
AMH can be higher in people with polycystic ovary syndrome, commonly called PCOS. In adults, it may be used within an appropriate diagnostic assessment, but it should not be used as the sole test to diagnose the condition.
The clinician also considers menstrual patterns, signs or tests of excess androgen activity and other possible explanations. AMH is not recommended for diagnosing PCOS in adolescents. The PCOS diagnosis guide explains why the diagnosis requires more than a raised hormone value or a scan finding.
Do not begin medication or a restrictive diet merely to lower the number. If an underlying condition is identified, the treatment plan should address your symptoms, health and pregnancy goals.
Discuss response before fertility stimulation
Higher AMH can identify an increased risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome during fertility treatment. In this condition, an excessive response to stimulation can cause enlarged ovaries and fluid shifts, sometimes resulting in serious illness.
The fertility team can use your assessment to individualise the medicine plan and monitoring. Ask what precautions are proposed and what might lead the team to change the cycle plan. Do not alter injection doses yourself or assume that collecting the greatest possible number of eggs is always the safest target.
Know the contact plan during treatment
Before stimulation starts, obtain the clinic’s contact details, including instructions outside normal opening hours. Report concerning abdominal swelling or pain, vomiting or reduced urine promptly during or after treatment. Chest pain or difficulty breathing needs emergency assessment.
These symptoms require assessment rather than interpretation through an AMH number. A high result alone is not an emergency, and it does not mean you already have hyperstimulation. Its value is in helping the team plan and monitor treatment appropriately while keeping the wider fertility picture in view.
