Week 34 of pregnancy: Packing Plans and Knowing Who to Call
At 34 weeks, packing is most useful when it makes leaving home simpler. You do not need every possible item ready before you can ask for care. Start with what you would want someone to find quickly, then add comfort items as convenient.
Pack around care and everyday needs
Keep your maternity notes or the details needed to access them, birth preferences and usual medicines easy to find. Comfortable clothing, underwear, maternity pads, toiletries, glasses if you use them, a phone charger and basic baby clothing and nappies are common essentials.
Ask your maternity service what it supplies and whether it has a local packing list. Put frequently used items on a note beside the bag so you can add them when leaving. A support person can use the same note if you are unable to pack the last few things yourself.
For preparation at home, the week 32 guide helps you focus on essentials without needing a complete nursery.
Make the contact plan easier than the packing plan
Save your maternity unit’s urgent number in your phone and somewhere a support person can find it. Check which entrance to use, how transport could work at different times of day and who could look after other children or pets.
This is a logistics exercise, not a requirement to predict when birth will happen. If you need assessment unexpectedly, call first and follow the team’s advice. Someone else can bring belongings later.
Recognize possible early labour
Birth before 37 weeks is premature. At this stage, regular contractions or tightenings, pains like period cramps, an unusual backache or a gush or trickle of vaginal fluid need an immediate call to your midwife or maternity unit.
You do not need to wait for strong pain or prove that fluid is amniotic fluid. The team will decide what assessment is needed. Our labour signs guide provides background, but reading it should not delay the call.
Use the routine visit for the remaining questions
The NHS schedule usually includes a 34 week appointment. Birth preparation, pain relief and questions about care can be discussed alongside routine checks. Your own plan may involve a different schedule or extra visits.
Bring a short list of things that are still unclear, such as an unexplained result or how to contact the team outside office hours. Before leaving, confirm the next appointment and what should prompt an earlier call. A bag is useful; knowing how to reach care is more important.
